Classic road trip tunes from artists like Bruce Springsteen, the Eagles, and Elton John are enjoyable, but are they suitable for learner drivers? Winter presents unique challenges, including busy roads, dark nights, and potentially dangerous conditions. Distracting music can further complicate these conditions.
To determine the ideal driving soundtrack for winter, we analyzed Spotify data to identify the most and least distracting songs. Here’s what our research revealed.
Distraction Levels in Driving Music
To help you curate the ideal driving playlist this winter, we’ve analyzed song distraction levels. Our research identifies the top five least distracting songs for maintaining focus, and conversely, the top five most distracting tracks to avoid during winter driving conditions.
Our methodology involved a detailed analysis of 4,185 songs from the 20 most popular driving playlists on Spotify. We evaluated each song based on three key metrics: energy, danceability, and valence (emotional charge).
Songs deemed highly distracting exhibited high energy and emotional charge, coupled with low danceability, indicating an irregular beat or tempo. We quantified these metrics as follows:
- Energy Score: The top 50% of high-energy songs were assigned scores between 0 and 1.
- Danceability Score: We used Spotify’s danceability score, adjusted by subtracting 1, so that high danceability songs received scores closer to 0.
- Valence Score: We measured the distance between 0.5 and Spotify’s valence score, with emotionally charged songs (positive or negative) receiving scores closer to 1.
These individual scores were then averaged to determine an overall distraction score for each song.
To ensure relevance, we focused exclusively on songs with a Spotify popularity score of 80 or higher, using the Spotify API. This selection process prioritized the most frequently played tracks.
Driving Music and Winter Safety
Here’s a breakdown of music’s impact on driving, alongside crucial winter driving tips:
Music for Focus:
- Discover the top 50 songs proven to be the least distracting while driving, characterized by balanced energy, emotion, and danceability.
- Explore the top 50 songs known to be highly distracting, typically featuring high energy, low danceability, and strong emotional content.

Winter Driving Essentials:
Use a higher gear in icy conditions for improved vehicle control, particularly when pulling away in snow. Winter presents unique driving challenges beyond music. Prepare for icy roads, potential snowfall, early darkness, and foggy mornings.
Prioritize safety with expert winter driving tips:
- Increase following distances, as stopping distances double on wet surfaces and worsen on ice or snow.
- Ensure tire tread depth is at least 1.6mm, and consider winter tires for enhanced grip.
- Regularly check vehicle lights due to shorter days and longer nights.
- Keep a blanket or extra coat in the car for emergency warmth.
